What is Pitch Wars?
Pitch Wars is an author contest run by the amazing and generous Brenda Drake (THIEF OF LIES and TOUCHING FATE, Entangled Teen Publishing). She gets 100 established authors to donate their time to mentor up and coming authors. On August 17, authors from around the world submitted the first ten pages of their manuscripts. We were allowed to choose 5 mentors to submit to. We then waited with horrible stomachaches for two weeks to hear if were chosen.
On September 1, I found out I was chosen not by one, but TWO of the amazing mentors: Kate Foster (WINELL ROAD, Jet Black Publishing) and JC Davis (CHEESUS WAS HERE, Sky Pony Press).
We took two months to fix up my Middle Grade novel, THE NERD ARMY, into something that will wow the agents during the agent round on November 3-4. I got three requests for the manuscript and was free to send to other agents. I am now deep in the trenches of querying (submitting the manuscript to agents). This process can take months to years, but I am hopeful to land an agent with either this manuscript or my next one (which is in the editing phase right now).
HOW DOES PUBLISHING WORK?
Writing a book is the first step. It takes a lot of time to write the first manuscript. Then, that manuscript has to be perfected. Some people use a critique group of other writers. Others take advantage of the opportunity to have an established author critique their work at SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) events. And others take advantage of contests like Pitch Wars (thanks Brenda!)
Next, you have to find an agent to believe in your work. Once signed, revisions begin again under agent critiques.
Finally, if you're lucky enough, an editor will buy your manuscript from the agent and revisions begin again until your masterpiece is finally PUBLISHED.
The entire process can take years, but it will be worth it to finally see my name on the book shelf!
